The ceremony will recognize the contributions of Black Peruvians in different aspects of society, honoring the legacy of a community that has been historically ignored and hidden in the history of Peru, even though African descendants in Peru make up to 10% of the total population.
The award recipients this year are: Ebelin Ortiz, a popular singer, actor and TV host. Luis Rocca, a scholar and historian from the northern Peru region of Zana, a city of strong Afro Peruvian presence. General Juan Carlos Urcariegui, member of Peru’s military forces and the highest ranked Black in the Peruvian military; also a special award will go to worldwide-famous dance and music ensemble Peru Negro.
Makungu Para el Desarrollo will also honor two icons of Afro Peruvian culture that passed away this year: Amador Ballumbrosio, a popular traditionalist and patriarch of a family of talented musicians; and especially to Arturo Cavero, the most popular and best known composer and singer of Afro Peruvian music today.

You shouldn't refer to African-Peruvians as "blacks". Perhaps, "black" is not an ethnicity. Do you call them "brownies"?
ReplyDeleteIt's correct to call Black people as Blacks in the English language grammar. There are African descendant peoples who aren't Black as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Peruanista, as always!
