I am very sorry. I am Peruvian -living in the US half my life- and this cover of Lima's Caretas magazine should be very offensive to anyone (September 4th, 2008 edition) I apologize to those who find it racist as I do -but be aware that not all Peruvians stand by this crap.
Precisely, Caretas has a racist trend. If you open its "social events" page, there you will see only white people, in a country like Peru where not even 5% are of European heritage. We are about 75% Indigenous -including mestizos who are mixed Indigenous- and some 15% Afro descendants. Unfortunately the education system and the media has convinced some Peruvians that we are actually Hispanics/whites because of our last names - imposed to our ancestors.
Caretas also had Venezuela's Hugo Chavez presented as a gorilla, making reference to the his actions against a TV station that financed and promoted a coup. But deep down they were referring to Chavez' his African heritage of course, back in June 2007.Painful reality
I got noticed of this photo by American in Lima, but later I found this: Barry, an African American in Lima writes:
- The fact is that racism is so ingrained in the society, that it is as easy as breathing. Few Peruvians will acknowledge that racism exists. They just don't seem to see it. Imagine, a magazine where people are supposed to think, and this is what they come up with.
But I blame black people in Peru, who prefer to call themselves morenos. Anything other than negro. They simply sit back and accept everything that happens around them.
I am willing to guess that I am the only one in this country who will have noticed that something is amiss here. I will likely be the only person in this country who will write to Caretas.
No Barry, I will also write to Caretas.
I'm disgusted, and Caretas should apologize - especially to Peruvians.

Su portada del 4 de setiembre de 2008 que muestra la foto del senador Barack Obama y el título "El tío Zambo" es no solamente racista e ignorante, sino que es ofensiva para todos los peruanos, quienes hemos heredado grandes contribuciones de la población africana de Perú. Su portada es una vergüenza para los peruanos en el mundo, en tiempos en que los países industrializados están trabajando para crear sociedades más inclusivas, y a punto de la elección del senador Obama como presidente de Estados Unidos. Su portada es un ejemplo de que en Perú existe un racismo en algunos sectores de nuestra población - tan enraizado que ustedes no se dan cuenta. Espero que Caretas se disculpe con sus lectores, por este lamentable insulto a la inteligencia, la dignidad humana y a la diversidad de Perú, un país de mayoría indígena y afro descendiente.

I agree ethnic distinctions are very strong here in Peru. Unfortunately it is common practice to discriminate based on ethnicity, age and nationality.
ReplyDeleteI recently baffled my students at ICPNA when I told them it was my opinion Peru is still a poor country because this kind of discrimination is legal here.
Stop the chollo, indio, negro, gringo distinctions. Hire the best person for the job - President of the US or any other job!

You are right, one of the biggest obstacles of Peru's progress is the racism that goes against Peruvians own racial heritages!
The day when Peruvians take pride on who they are, they will stop discriminating and segregating their own - and others. Then, most Peruvians will become progressive, responsible, respectful and ambitious citizens. I want to see that day coming soon!

ReplyDeleteEl problema en Perú es genético: los peruanos tienden a segregar, son orgullosos con pasión individual, es por eso que cuando se juntan entre racistas se hace un fuerte y desagradable grupo sectario.
Los peruanos deberían tomar su problema frontalmente y plantearse una solución basada en el pleno conocimiento de sus inclinaciones genéticas. Como digo, el orgullo muy íntimo y el segregacionismo fuerte lo tienen desde antes de la Conquista y es la causa de la cultura que hacen hoy. ¿Por qué en otros paises hispanos no se "heredó" tan maracadamente la huella hispana del racismo? En Perú no hay fraternidad, cada uno "tira pa´su lado". Sí hay cosas buenas, no se niega, por ejemplo la gente es solidaria, etcétera; pero hablando de racismo, no es fácil la solución, como digo el problema es genético.
Hace unos años, en tiempos previos a la elección del Papa actual, había una posibilidad de la elección de un Pontífice de raza africana, ¿recuerdas? Hicieron una encuesta en las poblaciones serranas de los Andes peruanos, los mismos campesinos y gente oriunda rechazaron la posibilidad de que haya un Papa negro aludiendo que tenía que ser blanco...
El problema peruano es fuerte, pero con una voluntad común se puede cambiar. SIN EMBARGO A NADIE LE PARECE NECESARIO HACERLO. Bestias racistas como los que publican esas fotos en la revista Caretas, con frases ofensivas, se cultivan desde los hogares peruanos.
El Perú, creo personalmente, no va a cambiar sino a largo plazo, sus mismos pobladores son sus propios enemigos.

Muy mal Caretas... Si esta es una de las revistas peruanas mas importantes, que se puede esperar de la poblacion general, en masa?
ReplyDeleteCreo que a mas de uno si no es a la mayoria, le parece graciosa esa portada... sea blanco, afro, asiatico, o indigena... habria que hacer una encuesta.
