Indigenous Peruvian is Miss Teenager Universe

A lot of Peruvians are very excited –well some- and celebrating because they heard news about a Peruvian teenager who supposedly had won the Miss Universe beauty pageant. But not really.

Lorelei Cornejo. Photo Intermodel

Lorelei Cornejo is an awesome looking Peruvian teenager of Indigenous heritage from the Amazon region of Ucayali.

Lorelei has just won one of those online beauty contests where anyone can vote for their favorite candidate. With only 19 contestants –some of them don’t even have their photos posted in the contest’ website, Cornejo got the most votes online. Good for her!

But the Miss Teenager Universe 2008 contest was organized by a group of amateur modeling agencies, led by Intermodel Guatemala -- whose description leads one to think it's a small business trying to get into the beauty contests competition business.

Donald Trump beware!

Funny reactions from Lima’s media

A very reliable sign that Peru is still an undeveloped country is the importance that Peruvians give to beauty contests. Of course, corrupted governments don’t let these news go unused, entertaining people with them as a sign of national pride.

Government-allied newspapers like El Comercio, RPP, and even the Peruvian official agency Andina have reported about this news, misleading Peruvians. In its Spanish version, Andina says:

"Miss Teenager is the equivalent of Miss Universe in the adolescents category, which places Lorelei among other Peruvian beuties that has conquer the planet like Maju Mantilla, Miss World 2004, and Glady Zender, Miss Universe 2007."

That's not true at all! And for that matter Andina didn't say that in the English version of the news, where they mention 40 contestants:

Lima, Oct. 20 (ANDINA).- Peruvian Lorelei Cornejo, a 18-year-old university student, won the Miss Teen Universe contest which was held Sunday night at the Teatro Abril in Guatemala.

Lorelei Cornejo, named Miss Teen Peru in April this year while representing the Amazonian region of Ucayali, won the Miss Teen Universe title from 40 contestants.

The Miss Teen Universe pageant judges were not only impressed by Cornejo’s beauty and grace but also by her intelligence.

Lorelei also won a prize of 15,000 dollars (10,000 dollars in cash and 5,000 dollars in gifts), and the opportunity to hone her acting skills and perform in Mexico.
"Last night was fabulous, we are happy for her, she is a pretty and very intelligent girl", said event organizer Marco Antonio Berganza Betancourt.

"The Peruvian community in Guatemala supported her during the contest with a group of 60 Peruvians including the ambassador", Berganza added.

The "Peruvian type"

Lorelei Cornejo, a Native Indigenous woman- has said to RPP (through a radio station in Lima):

"This achievement is for all my country. With this, we can say that the Peruvian women beauty is placing the name of Peru very highly. Mi parents are from the [Amazon] forest, and my type has impressed the jury. [...] I think is good that not all the beauty queens are blonde and with light eyes. I think the Peruvian type has other image of the [Indigenous] woman that attracts foreigners."

That, I give it to Lorelei -cute name by the way. Most Peruvian women are of Indigenous and African heritage and the mix of them with other ethnicites. But usually Peru is represented by white women or those who pretend to be white. Sad self-loathing racism.

Media verdad, media mentira.

Hola Blanca Mara,

Love your blog, very personal and genuine!

Felicidades.
